Secret Proposal at the Three Sisters of Glencoe: Connor & Aspen's Surprise Engagement in Scotland
Planning the Perfect Secret Proposal in Glencoe
As a Glencoe photographer, I regularly help visitors capture special moments in the Scottish Highlands, but few are quite as exciting as a secret proposal.
Several weeks before their trip, Connor got in touch with me from Ohio, USA. He and his girlfriend, Aspen, were travelling around Europe and had planned a visit to Scotland as part of their adventure. Connor had already decided that Glencoe would be the perfect place to ask one of the biggest questions of his life.
His dream was to propose with the iconic Three Sisters of Glencoe as the backdrop.
The challenge? Aspen couldn't know a thing about it.
After discussing locations, timings and logistics, we began putting together a plan that would allow Connor to surprise Aspen while ensuring we captured the moment naturally and discreetly.
Why We Chose Ralston Cairn Instead of the Main Three Sisters Viewpoint
Initially, Connor's idea was to propose at the main Three Sisters car park viewpoint. While the scenery there is undoubtedly spectacular, it's also one of the busiest spots in Glencoe, particularly during the tourist season.
Drawing on my local knowledge and years of experience photographing the area, I suggested an alternative location: Ralston Cairn.
The walk to the cairn provides a much more intimate setting, fewer crowds and an elevated perspective that offers an incredible view of the Three Sisters. Most importantly, it gave Connor and Aspen a private moment away from the busy roadside viewpoint while still enjoying one of Scotland's most iconic landscapes.
After plenty of planning, we settled on the route, timings and exact proposal location.
The Secret Mission Begins
On the day itself, we arranged to meet at the car park before heading towards the proposal location.
There was, however, one brief moment of panic.
Connor and Aspen arrived in a different hire car than the one he had originally told me to look out for.
For a few tense moments, I wondered if I had somehow missed them. Thankfully, I was on high alert and quickly worked out who they were before Aspen became suspicious.
With the operation back on track, I set off ahead while Connor and Aspen followed at a discreet distance.
Connor carefully followed my route across the river, up the hillside and along the path towards Ralston Cairn, all while keeping Aspen completely unaware of what was about to happen.
Capturing the Proposal Without Being Detected
Once we reached the location, it was time for me to blend into the landscape.
I positioned myself nearby and pretended to be photographing the scenery, occasionally taking shots of the incredible Glencoe views while secretly keeping an eye on Connor.
As the minutes passed, I could see him building up the courage to make his move.
Then it happened.
Connor got down on one knee overlooking the magnificent Three Sisters of Glencoe.
The moment Aspen realised what was happening was pure emotion.
As soon as the proposal began, I sprang into action, documenting every second while remaining as unobtrusive as possible.
Thankfully, Aspen said yes.
Tears, Laughter and Portraits Around Glencoe
After the initial surprise, there were plenty of tears, hugs and happy moments as the reality of the engagement began to sink in.
Once they had a chance to enjoy the moment together, we spent the rest of the session exploring several beautiful locations around Glencoe for engagement portraits.
The Scottish Highlands delivered everything we could have hoped for: dramatic mountains, stunning light and unforgettable scenery that perfectly matched the significance of the occasion.
The result was a collection of photographs documenting not only the proposal itself but also the excitement and joy that followed.
Behind the Scenes of This Surprise Proposal
I also captured a behind-the-scenes video of the proposal planning and execution, which I shared on Instagram.

Seeing everything come together after weeks of planning was incredibly rewarding and gives a fascinating glimpse into what goes into organising a successful surprise proposal in the Highlands.

Connor's proposal is a perfect example of how careful planning, local knowledge and experience can transform an idea into an unforgettable experience.
Choosing the right location, understanding visitor patterns, knowing how to stay unnoticed and having contingency plans in place all played a part in creating exactly the moment Connor had envisioned—and arguably even more than he imagined.
Being trusted to document such an important chapter in someone's life is always a privilege, and Connor and Aspen's Glencoe proposal is one I won't forget anytime soon.
